The Dangers of DIY Plumbing
DIY PLUMBING DISASTERS
Plumbings easy right? Wrong. If not done correctly can cause you extensive damage to your property, or worse affect your health.
DON’T RISK IT, ALWAYS USE A LICENSED PLUMBER
All too often we are called out to fix what someone has attempted to repair!
This sometimes can make the job twice as difficult for us and therefore more expensive to repair for the customer. DIY plumbing when not done correctly can end up causing massive damage to your property, and can even put your health at risk. Here’s a few reasons why you shouldn’t try to carry out plumbing repairs yourself.
PROPERTY DAMAGE
A job as simple as changing some tap washers can potentially lead to major damage in your home if not done properly. We recently attended a job, where the customer had changed the shower tap washers 6 months ago, not realising how important silicon is around the spindles, the water was leaking into the wall cavity while the shower was in use. This ended up rotting out the framework and extensive repairs were required. Another one we have seen is someone has capped off the expansion valve on a hot water system because they thought it was leaking when really it was letting water out for expansion as the water heated. This was a ticking time bomb and could have potentially blown up.
REGULATION REQUIREMENTS
Plumbing is a licensed trade. We have strict regulations that we have to abide by, and the penalties for carrying out unlicensed plumbing work is huge. Big fines apply. This can also affect a potential insurance claim if you end up damaging your property.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Plumbing, believe it or not, ensures that we live in a healthy environment. If our drinking water becomes contaminated due to cross-connections, or you connect a sewer line into the stormwater drain, you can become very ill. This could be done by something as simple as connecting your hand basin into your non-potable water feed, in a lot of newer estates, there is a mains water and a non-potable water supply which is recycled water. That’s right, its sewage that has been treated to be just good enough to use to flush your toilets.
